How to discuss care with your loved ones

February 25, 2021

When it becomes time to discuss care with your loved one, it’s important to be patient, mindful and sensitive with how you approach the subject. We know it can be a difficult conversation but when you or your family can no longer fulfil the needs of your loved one, it’s important they receive the support they need right away.

What care options are available?

Before you discuss care with your loved one, you should understand what options are available for them, and how they could impact your loved one’s life.

Care homes

Care homes allow elderly people, and those with a disability, to live and socialise in a shared space. To support them, a team of care staff are always on hand to ensure residents receive the support they need.

However, care homes are a big commitment - having your loved one move away to a new place can sometimes be worrying, especially for those with dementia. If your loved one really values their independence, they may find it tricky to settle in to a care home setting.

Home care

Home care, on the other hand, is a much more person-centred option that allows people with complex needs to live happy and safe in the familiar surroundings of their own home.

As a care provider ourselves, promoting independence at home and in the community is at the heart of the support we provide. Whether it's helping your loved round the house with cooking and housework, or 24-hour care to help them remain independent; we're here to help them with what they want, not just what they need.

If you’re looking for covid-safe home care you can trust, learn all about our care online, or get in touch with our friendly team on 01702 361405.

Plan ahead

Once you have an idea about the options available, you should plan out what you want to say ahead of time. Make a mental note of the key points you want to bring up, and carefully consider who you want to accompany you. You should involve at least some of the family in the discussion, so that everyone has a chance to voice their thoughts and contribute ideas.

Of course, with COVID-19 restrictions in place, it may not be possible to discuss care face-to-face; consider over the phone discussions or video chat software instead.

Do what’s best for your loved one

At the end of the day, it’s all about doing what’s best for your loved one so they can live a happy, fulfilling life. If you keep this at the forefront of your mind, and put the needs of your loved one first, we’re certain you’ll find a solution that works for everyone.

Whether it's helping your loved one perfect their cooking skills, raving with them at an Elvis tribute concert, or 24-hour care to help them remain independent; we're here to help your loved one with what they want, not just what they need. Our incredible team can provide reliable, COVID-safe care at home and in the community. Come rain, snow, or shine, we’ll be there whenever your loved one needs us.
